Commercial Investigations

Commercial investigations that hold up

Corporate and commercial investigations for companies, attorneys and insurers across South Africa.

Apex Ops investigates fraud, theft, misconduct and loss for organisations that need to know what happened and need to be able to prove it. Our investigators are PSIRA-registered, our work is done under written mandate and within the law, and our reports are written to be used: in a disciplinary hearing, at the CCMA, in a civil claim, in an insurance submission or in a criminal docket.

Scope

What we investigate.

Eight areas of work, all of them commercial. We do not take on domestic or matrimonial matters.

Fraud and financial misconduct

Procurement fraud, kickbacks, invoice manipulation, misuse of company funds and accounting irregularities.

Employee theft and misconduct

Stock loss, cash theft, time theft, conflicts of interest, breaches of policy, and the collusion that usually sits behind them.

Cargo loss and hijacking

Investigation of lost, stolen or hijacked consignments, including driver and depot collusion, syndicate involvement and recovery, for logistics operators and their insurers.

Due diligence and background screening

Verification of executives, suppliers, partners and counterparties before you sign, including criminal, credit, qualification and reputational checks with the subject’s consent where the law requires it.

Asset tracing

Locating assets and the people who hold them, in support of recovery and enforcement.

Surveillance and intelligence

Covert and overt surveillance, undercover placements and intelligence gathering, conducted lawfully and documented for evidence.

Intellectual property and counterfeiting

Identification of counterfeit goods, grey channels and the parties trading in them.

Workplace incidents

Independent investigation of incidents, allegations and grievances where the organisation needs findings it can defend.

Method

How we work.

Mandate firstEvery investigation starts with a written mandate that sets out the question, the scope, the methods and the reporting. Nothing begins without it.
Lawful methodsWe operate within the Private Security Industry Regulation Act, the Protection of Personal Information Act and the Regulation of Interception of Communications Act. Evidence gathered unlawfully is evidence you cannot use, and we do not gather it.
Admissibility in mindOur investigators document chain of custody, keep contemporaneous notes and write reports that a chairperson, a commissioner or a court can follow.
DiscretionInvestigations are run on a need-to-know basis inside your organisation as well as outside it. Most of our work is never visible to the people it concerns until the findings are presented.
ReportingYou receive a written report with findings, evidence and recommendations, and, where you need it, our investigators are available to give evidence.

Who instructs us

  • Attorneys who need investigative support for a client matter
  • Insurers and loss adjusters assessing a claim
  • Logistics and fleet operators who have lost a load
  • Boards and audit committees that need an independent answer
  • Business owners who suspect something and need to know before they act

Investigations and escorts, together

Cargo crime is the crime we understand best because we work on both sides of it. Our escort crews know how loads are taken; our investigators know how to trace what happened afterwards. For logistics clients, that means one provider for prevention, response and investigation.

Frequently asked questions

Are your investigators registered?

Yes. Private investigators in South Africa must be registered with PSIRA, and ours are. Registration numbers are available on request.

Can your findings be used in a disciplinary hearing or in court?

Our reports are written for that purpose. We document methods and chain of custody so that findings can be tested, and our investigators can give evidence.

How long does an investigation take?

A background check can take days; a fraud investigation can take months. We give an estimate of scope, duration and cost in the mandate before work begins.

What does an investigation cost?

Costs depend on scope, duration and the resources required. We quote against the mandate, and we tell you early if the facts are taking the matter beyond it.

Will anyone know we are investigating?

Only the people you decide should know. Discretion is a condition of every mandate.
